The “Just Try It On” Rule: Why the Hanger Doesn’t Tell the Whole Story
We hear it in the boutique ALL the time.
“That's cute, but it won't look good on me.”
And that's usually when we say:
“Just try it on.”
Because after years of helping women shop, we've learned something important—the hanger is a terrible judge of how something is going to look on your body.
Clothes Are Made to Be Worn, Not Hangered
Some pieces look amazing hanging on a rack.
Others? Not so much.
A dress might look shapeless until it falls against your body. A wide-leg jean might look intimidating until you see how flattering it is on. A top you would have walked right past might have the perfect neckline once it's actually on.
You simply don't know until you try.
“I Can’t Wear That.”
Oh, we hear this one too.
“I can't wear wide-leg jeans.”
“I can't wear sleeveless tops.”
“I can't wear that color.”
“I can't wear that at my age.”
But who made those rules?
Sometimes those ideas come from something we tried years ago. Sometimes they're based on old fashion rules. And sometimes we've simply convinced ourselves that a certain style isn't “for us.”
Our suggestion?
Give it 30 seconds in the fitting room.
You might still hate it—and that's perfectly fine.
But you might LOVE it.
Your Size Doesn't Get to Make the Decision Either
Here's another reason trying things on matters: sizing is inconsistent.
You can be one size in one brand and something completely different in another.
That doesn't mean your body changed between hangers.
It means clothes fit differently.
The number on the tag is information we use to help find your fit. It is not a grade, a goal, or a definition of your body.
This Is Where Boutique Shopping Gets Fun
One of our favorite things to do at Cruz By Design is bring something into the fitting room that a customer never would have chosen for herself.
Sometimes we get the look.
You know the one.
The “There is absolutely no way I'm wearing that” look.
And then she tries it on.
She looks in the mirror.
And suddenly…
“Wait. I actually LOVE this.”
Those are some of our favorite moments.
You Don't Have to Buy It—You Just Have to Try It
Trying something outside your comfort zone doesn't mean you have to take it home.
Maybe it's still not you. That's completely fine.
But every once in a while, you'll discover a new silhouette, color, fit, or style you never thought you could wear.
That's how personal style evolves.
So the next time you're shopping and immediately think, “That's not for me,” give yourself permission to try it anyway.
You might walk right back out of the fitting room and put it on the rack.
Or you might discover your new favorite outfit.
Either way, fashion should be FUN.
Style Without Rules. Confidence Without Limits.
